S14 Design and analyse basic structures
Initial skills rating
September 2011
Like I said in S13. I trained and worked as a design draughtswoman for 11 years so I will have some understanding of basic structures. I would be able to offer some explanation of the forces experienced but I would not feel very confident.
Structures presentation
As part of a group task we researched structures and produced a PowerPoint to help deliver a taught session to our Peers. We started by sharing our existing knowledge and then divided the areas of research amongst ourselves.
I was really surprised at the number of different approaches we could take to the topic and how much we offered each other by working collaboratively. I am finding working way so beneficial. By sharing my knowledge I begin to realise how much I already know and by listening to others the gaps in my own knowledge are quickly filled. By checking with sites like BBC Bitesize I am able to bring my own knowledge and learning into context.

We though the best approach to planning an activity was to try making our own towers within the restrictions we were setting. This high lighted any problems in our approach and were able to make modifications before giving our presentation.
There were many approaches to making the towers but all had taken into consideration the effect of struts and ties.
