C9 Understanding of packaging design
Initial knowledge/skills rating *
September 2011
I have very little knowledge of packaging design but I do have a daughter who is passionate about it and when you have someone who is that enthusiastic, it is hard not to have some of it rub off on you. I have trawled through book-shelf after book-shelf looking for the latest inspiration for her and been dragged to many department stores and super markets to view ingenious packaging designs.
Before starting this course I made a point of looking through my daughters considerable reference shelf so that I could familiarise myself with the sort of material she could guide me to. Unfortunatly it is all located in Cornwall so I have purchased my own copy of Packaging the Brand by Gavin Ambroise/Paul Harris. It is a really well laid out book taking you from beginner to at least GCSE standard if not beyond. Now all I need to do is read it.

Lunch Time!
I was about to eat this avocado when I noticed the shape of the cardboard packaging. The two tear shapes fitted nicely together using a minimal amount of space. A compact design is very important from both the storage and transport point view. The more products that can be a stored in one place the more economical the overheads. The more goods that could be transported per journey the cheaper products can be produced and the greater the scope for profit.
The cardboard packaging is environmentally friendly as it is already being recycled, may be recycled again but is also biodegradable. The economy in the design means minimal materials are being used by. The cardboard offers some protection to the avocados ensuring the produce reaches its customers in the best possible condition.
The thin transparent cellophane outer packaging holds the produce together. It also provides the medium to convey important information. The front of the packaging carries the colourful eye catching image as well as the name of the store, the name of produce and a brief description. An additional bright red circle contains details of an offer. Finally on the front we have to sell by and to use by dates.
The reverse of packaging is less colourful. It carried information such as the barcode, nutritional information, recycling information and consumer rights. Unfortunately my photos did not come out very clearly, I think I must have been too keen to eat my lunch. As I am surrounded by opportunities to analyse packaging I am not going to worry about my fuzzy photographs.
