C7 Construction of working drawings.
Initial knowledge/skills rating **
September 2011
I spent eleven years producing working drawings in both third and third angle projection. Familiarising myself with what is required from a teaching point of view would be my next step.
Producing drawings for working with wood seemed a little strange. My wood required jointing using the biscuit jointer and I had no idea how detailed this information needed to be on my drawings. Then when it is important to miss the joins how do you position them on a drawing when in real life the assembled wood has been cut down to size after joining changing the position of the biscuits in relation to the edges. I really want to talk to someone about this.
Working drawings
The first of the two drawings was easy to produce. I spent a lot of years producing manufacturing drawing with far more detail. What I found difficult about the second drawing was trying to make a working drawing for wood. It just did not feel right. How can you produce a drawing when the position of the biscuit joints is going to change when the edge of the wood is trimmed away. Also dividing wood so that you have even sized finger joints leads to measurements with fractions of millimetres, wood is not normally worked with that degree of accuracy. I have never seen a carpenter with anything more then a sketch on a scrap of paper. I wonder how the professionals tackle this problem?
Jan 2013 *****
To be honest I think my skills rating for this section always was a five star but my confidence was a two star. I started the course not knowing what I was going to expected to learn to degree level. I am not sure how much I could cram into my little brain. The truth is I spent eleven years producing manufacturing drawings so I have as much knowledge as I am likely to need for teaching and anything I do not know I will learn. I found it just as easy to produce manufacturing drawings using CAD but this used to upset the 3D Printer and I would have to delete the construction lines. Shame I did not keep the evidence but getting the 3D printer to work at the time took priority.
